GEN. CHIANG KAI-SHEK'S

APPRECIATION

FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT

CHUNGKING, Oct. 13

In praising the British-American move to relinquish extra-territorial rights, General Chiang Kai-shek addressed the following messages of appreciation to Mr. Churchill and Mr. Roosevelt through the Embassies:---

TO MR. CHURCHILL :-China appreciates deeply the gesture of friendship and good will which Great Britain has made in her deter- mination to abrogate extra-territoriality in China. I feel certain that this expressive evi- dence of Chinese-British friendship, based on equal and mutual trust, will inaugurate a new and significant era not only in the Far East but throughout the entire world.

TO PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT:-The entire nation has rejoiced at the voluntary move furthermore the ringing of the Liberty Bell in Independence Hall to commemorate China's Liberty Day finds resounding echoes of good will and friendship in every Chinese heart.

I personally am so deeply moved by this beautiful and touching gesture that I cannot 'find words adequate to express my own feel-

ing.

Throughout my struggle to secure the national freedom of China I have continually dreamed of the day when she would assume the full stature of an independent democratic nation. To-day this ideal has been realized. From the bottom of my heart I thank you for your superb inspired leadership and moral courage in assisting China, to gain- equality among the United Nations. I assure you that China will not fail you in the task of securing freedom for all mankind.
